Integrating technology and social science research for greater harmony with society and the environment
The Institute of Nuclear Safety System (INSS) was established in March 1992, prompted by an accident in Unit-2 of the Mihama Power Plant operated by The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO), in which the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) was activated in Japan for the first time.
The Institute’s mission is to conduct a wide range of investigations and researches to improve the safety and reliability of nuclear power generation, and share the results within Japan and abroad.

KEPCO is the sole investor in INSS. However, the Institute has been performing researches and investigations as a third party from its beginning. INSS is comprised of two institutes: the Institute of Social Research and the Institute of Nuclear Technology. This organizational structure allows us to undertake multi-aspect research addressing issues not only in technology but also in human science and social science.
The two Institutes are working closely together, promoting open research activities and supporting joint research inside and outside Japan, offering objective advice and recommendations to KEPCO, and publicizing research results that improve the safety and reliability of nuclear power generation.
INSS will contribute to the society through the pursuit of nuclear power generation that is friendly to the society and the natural environment.
